'97 1500 4 Wire Trailer Connector

From : thats me

Q: sons truck just purchased has class iv hitch installed but only has 4 wire connector plug. he wants to pull a small trailer. we hooked up to my travel trailer with a 4 to 7 adapter to test the rig and found this a. headlights off rt lt brake lights on trailer work. b. headlights on rt lt tail lights on trailer work step on brakes tail lights go out. i crawled under the truck and saw that hitch is aftermarket install not factory installer used a kit to tap into tail light connectors. looked in the relay box under the hood and there is a trailer tow relay in there. i do not have wiring diagram for this truck trailer to be towed is fiberglass on steel frame and requires ground wire in plug to for lights to function. any ideas on how to rewire this thing temporarily i think the best thing to do is to put a towing harness in the truck and add a 7 pin connector but that will not be possible for awhile. thanks. have a nice day. ldpoos@nopants.juno.com remove nopants to reply by direct e-mail; support the right to privacy and anti-spam projects. .

on tue 16 sep 2003 232238 gmt yqcbbf@whab.pbz thats me wrote id suggest either getting a new wiring kit or to just use trial and error.. a 10 amp circuit breaker helps when i got my tent trailer it was wired differently from my truck wiring.... running lights would flash for turns etc... once i established which was ground that only leaves 3 wires.... if the plug on the trailer is not the type where you can change the wiring use test leads instead but just try 1 wire at a time to see the position on the hitch connecter of brakes running lights and turn flashers... takes a few min and when youre done mark the wires with tape computer mailing labels etc.... so you know whats up when you change trailers.. sons truck just purchased has class iv hitch installed but only has 4 wire connector plug. he wants to pull a small trailer. we hooked up to my travel trailer with a 4 to 7 adapter to test the rig and found this a. headlights off rt lt brake lights on trailer work. b. headlights on rt lt tail lights on trailer work step on brakes tail lights go out. i crawled under the truck and saw that hitch is aftermarket install not factory installer used a kit to tap into tail light connectors. looked in the relay box under the hood and there is a trailer tow relay in there. i do not have wiring diagram for this truck trailer to be towed is fiberglass on steel frame and requires ground wire in plug to for lights to function. any ideas on how to rewire this thing temporarily i think the best thing to do is to put a towing harness in the truck and add a 7 pin connector but that will not be possible for awhile. thanks. have a nice day. ldpoos@nopants.juno.com remove nopants to reply by direct e-mail; support the right to privacy and anti-spam projects. .

if you are in canada.. go to ugh canadian tire and get the blue driving lights. they are bullet shaped and fit great... and only $60.00.... or if you arent lucky enough to live here you can always check online at www.canadiantire.ca m. i am getting ready to build a custom bumper for my 1996 ram and i am looking at replacing my factory fog lights with aftermarket units. currently im looking at cibie piaa and hella lights. ive budgeted $200 for the lights and a relay ill use the factory wiring up to the crossmember. i have decided on running clear fog light instead of yellow ones after reading many articles including the on at www.gi.alaska.edu/scienceforum/asf5/593.html any good suggestions gary carter .
