96 dakota transmission sticks in first and second after staring

Q: if i stop the car and put it in park and then back in drive it stays in first and second gear to get it into drive i have to pull over and sit still for a minute and it goes into drive. however at this point it starts out froom a stopp in drive and then will shiift to overdrive alsoo when the first problem happens sticking in first and second when it trys to go to drive there is nothing but free spin any suggestions .
