95 Ram Van Runnning Poorly
From : Annonymous
Q: im doing the father thing and trying to find a problem for my daughter... 1995 ram van 3/4 ton with the 3.9l v6 auto. this thing has been running really well. suddenly about 2 weeks ago it started running very poorly - hesitation bogging poor shifting etc. and the check engine light came on. my sil dumped the code and got a 25 that said there was either a vacuum problem or the automatic idle solenoid was bad. he looked for vacuum leaks and pulled the ais. it appeared that the plunger was frozen and the unit was dead. so he bought an ais. after installation the van ran fine again for about 6 - 10 miles then started the same symptoms. this time when he dumped the codes he got a vacuum problem or map sensor 14. so he picked up a salvage yard map sensor. after installation the van ran fine for a day then started the same hesitation bogging etc. i presume this is how the thing runs when in limp mode and this time my daughter was in the van and when it ran poorly she could feel a vibration on her floorboard and actually hear a popping... when he checked he found what i believe is the carbon canister on the passenger side floor area. he took it off and it appears to be full of sand and grit and foreign material. so he went back to the salvage yard and found one for a v8 which had different holes but he was able to block some and get it to work. with this canister the van ran fine except that the shift point was later on the transmission. but other than that everything seems to be ok... hes contacted 8 or 9 salvage yards and several local dealers. nobody has the right canister for this thing - a couple of the salvage yards told him that canister was the first thing that gets stripped off any truck with the v-6 so apparently they fail in any case do any of you folks have an idea whats going on here im presuming the ais may have been defective since it was frozen but that the actual problem is related to vacuum... could this canister pick up sand and crud from outside he says there are holes in the top and when the van warms up you can actually hear noise from the canister... ideas .

that indicates that one of the sensors is probably still screwed up. did anyone check the oxygen sensors -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving ideas yea..stop putting junk on it and get the right parts. also iirc you are hearing the purge solienoid....its gonna make a knocking noise when its working right...and the v8 unit and the v6 are different. ok anybody got any useful ideas the sil installed the right carbon canister that finally came into the dealer... no difference in performance. still ok when cold and poor operation when warm... .
