95 Ram V8 sucking antifreeze/overheating?
From : japhar81
Q: how do you know and what does that usually cost blown head gasket. get out your checkbook. japhar81@gmail.com writes all i have a 95 ram 2500 v8 magnum about 120k miles.. about two weeks ago the temp gauge went nuts and almost redlined. i found my coolant reservoir almost empty. i topped off the radiator and the reservoir while engine was dead-cold and everything was peachy again. today 2 weeks later the temp was fine this morning but on my way home 20 mile drive spiked again and i found the reservoir empty. i dont think its leaking i didnt see any drippage or anything after it sat a full night in the driveway but then again antifreeze evaporates pretty quick... anyone have any thoughts before i take it to a dealer hell even if i need to take it in id like to have something useful to tell them... help! .

uh roy . . .you were the only one thinking about that . . . . . bg budd my point is there will always be a correct way to do things and 99% of your modern techs couldnt do them right if their lives depended on it. true mechanics are a dying breed . . . . budd just for argument sake cause i know you hate to argue.... vbg there can be more than one way to do a job correctly. for instance packing wheel bearings on old dinosaurs. after cleaning and toweling dry the bearings you could pack them by putting a glob of grease in the palm of your hand and working it into the bearing by hand. i could pack it with one of those new fangled bearing packers. both pushes new grease thru the bearing and out the other side/cage. which is the most correct way of packing them not that im old enough to have ever worked on something that old......... bg denny dont mention packing too loud. a few here might get the wrong idea. bfg roy .

hose from solenoid valve hose from tank to canister hose from canister to engine compartment plastic hose manifold on canister bad leak test pump on my 2001 ram i had one hose split open and the hose manifold was cracked. it was covered under warranty. the standard warranty emissions warranty and extended warranty will all cover most of these issues. my understanding is this system is to prevent gas fumes from being vented to the atmosphere. it does not normally cause any engine running problems but will fail some states emissions tests. jpc wrote i have two codes in memory and an engine light on p0455....large leak evap. sys.----what might this one be p0442....small leak evap. sys.----i assume this is the gas cap although it has been there for several weeks and several removal and replacing gas cap.---what else could this one be 2002 dakota quad 3.9 johnc .

typically your oil will show way overfull on the dipstick. you may also see water droplets on the oil that shows on the dipstick. it will appear very foamy. japhar81@gmail.com writes how japhar81 wrote yeah it was normal last time it overheated 2 weeks ago. today it seems to be at the exact same level but its dark and im using a flashlight. will double-check tomorrow in the am when the sun is out. i also didnt notice any oil in the reservoir... maybe the temp. sensor gasket is leaking check your oil for coolant in it. .

bob the correct answer here is buy a 2500 or a 3500 and get a real truck. i have a 96 5.9 1500 and i just received my new 3500 qc lb with the ho cummins. i cannot believe the difference. there is no comparison. this truck is fabulous. it is better than anything i have seen any brand any model any year. the more i drive it the better it gets. steve john robertson wrote hi. i am wanting to trade out my 20s with 26000 miles on them for the stock 17s. the tires must have less then 5000 miles on them and i am wanting eithier the aluminum or the 4x4 off road wheels. not the factory chrome. email if interested john cant say i blame you. those ghetto wheels are whats keeping me from buying a new ram. i know i can get the 17 wheels but here in texas the only way to do it is to buy the stripped out ram. dealers all say it would cost me $$ to get rid of the 20 and go with the 17 wheels. for now im holding onto my 01 ram. good luck. bob .

steve l- i have an 80 ramcharger 4x4 with a 9 and 1/4 dana 60 out back with sure-grip. i recently changed the fluid and didnt add any friction modifier on the advice of a trusted mechanic. i was curious why less preferably none friction modifier is better is it very thin and therefore reduces the overall viscosity of the gear lube does it harm the diff not trying to be a jerk just trying to understand. thanks carl actually you should not add any lsd friction modifier unless you are detecting clutch chatter when turning around corners slowly. if the clutch plates in the diff arent complaining just use straight 80/90 hypoid lube. you can always add it later if required. if you must add the stuff use as little as possible. one ounce is often enough. none is better. steve friends i have a 1996 pu 1500 v8 5.9l snow plow and tow package with the lsd and need to change the gear oil in the rear actually front too. i know these types of questions have been asked before but i want to make sure im doing it right and implore on your tolerance. is 80w 90 okay for the rear as i have some on hand i bought a bottle of the friction modifier from the dealer and its 4oz. it says to add 2 to 5% based on the gear lubricant weight terrible in math i am. on an earlier post someone stated to add 8oz. is this what my truck needs or is 4oz right what type of differentials do i have are they dana 44 and 9 1/4 for front/rear in the owners manual it says the fluid level for the front should be 1/4 inch below the plug and 5/8 below the plug on the back if i have the above differentials right. does it really need to be that exact on an unrelated note do i have the 231 transfercase im changing that fluid as well. thanks very much all. steve .

a cabinet saw is a form of a table saw that costs $$$$. if the motor on your table saw sticks out of the back of it and is fairly easily removable you have a contractors saw. a cabinet was has all its moving parts contained within the case cabinet and weighs a ton. i hope to have mine before the winter sets in if i can get the damn shop done. have you been to http//www.grizzly.com yet. their catalog is like the woodworkers dream book. that is where im ordering my cabinet saw from. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving on tue 14 sep 2004 025734 gmt fmb fmbb@sbcglobal.net wrote yup rec.woodworking is a nice place to go spend time. you have a lot less politics to deal with. im still waiting to install my 10 delta cabinet saw.... hmm... whatz a cabinet saw ive go a table saw and a cutoff saw not sure what a cabinet saw is.. you use it to cut up all the empty tequila bottles in the cabinet of your trailer mac mac a cabinet saw is what you buy when your garage is so full of stuff you need cabinets. so you go out and spend your hard earned $$$$ on a http//www.deltamachinery.com/index.aspe=136&p=4739 and then wait till you can find room for all the crap in the garage to set up your saw so you can build cabinets for all the crap in the garage that is taking up all the space that your table saw should be taking. fagetaboutit im going back out to the fox to look for that takillya. seriously im going to build a shed out back and store a bunch of stuff out there so i have garage space again. then build the cabinets and store crap in a more orderly manner. what i will have in the end is a very nice saw some very nice cabinets and a whole lot of crap that i wont have to see anymore. btw she didnt see me sunday when i snuck my apple ii upgraded to an apple ii+ into the garbage can. it is gone now... rip... -- fmb only one b in fmb .

because i didnt need to. really i find that impossible to believe. after all you claimed to have had full knowledge of the figures and if you had them posting a link to proof would have done a lot for your credibility and worthiness of respect. of course you do budd. you have become rather bitter nd feel the eed to settle some imaginary score with me. i had nothing to prove at the time. you didnt say nobody was killed yo just said that it wasnt that dangerous and i wondered what you considerd dangerous then. if being respected is as important to you as it appears to be judging from your demands for respect then im sure that almost anyone else would have posted the link to improve credibility and worthiness of respect. why do you keep saying that i demand respect i never made any such demand. i only suggested that we try to act civilly toward each other and save the bs for political debates but you have made it clear that you are either unable or unwilling to do so. i knew that many people were killed by these trucks although i didnt have or needed an exact number and thought that you did as well. exactly what information did i need to post i just wanted to understand your reasoning. my reasoning was something you dont handle well honesty. i had never heard or read any figures on deaths directly caused by the tank location. i had no figures to work with just the report of the media staging faked explosions. and thats all you needed to say instead of attacking me. the problem is that if you make it a mission to correct me because of all of my errors as you see it in posting then you had better expect the same in return. just because you didnt know is no excuse you could have looked it up prior to saying it as you said about me. there were no numbers involved yet when i asked you my question. if you would have been man enough to just answer it none of this would have happened. and when i told you my reasoning for not answering your original question you attacked because your reason was an attack as said by john as well. 9/11/04 451 pm could you possibly act any more than a mad little boy. he said a so ill do b waaaaaa!!!! the fact that you called it a stupid question when facts show it to be valid also proves that your claimed need for accuracy is just a lie and justification for your childish attacks. i need say no more so ill stop now then when i said that i had not heard of any deaths you acted like i should have. i also noted that you didnt have any figures to give until after johns post yet you claimed to have known them all along to which i gave a comparison of your sudden knowledge as being like the claims of accurate prophecy by a person that is historically known to be less than 30% accurate . . . iow tom i said you were a liar about having previously known the figures. i never said that i knew the exact figures so stop spinning like an angry child. i didnt need to know the exact numbers for the question that i asked you. even if only 1 person died for this reason and i knew it was many would be enough to question your comment. so whos really being the childish one tom who is the one that took an honest simple statement made by me and attacked it you did and someone other than me said so just like you are doing now. who is the one that continues to drag his own credibility in the mud with his childish arguments against me when i give simple direct honest answers now thats the problem budd you didnt give a simple direct or honest answer. instead you came back with a childish reply which indicated that you knew that you were wrong and were called on it by someone with the lowest noise ratio in the group. and you probably did it because you knew that is your were upfront and honest that i would have called you on you bs need for accuracy. who is it that uses my faith health probs and age as weapons against me like the spoiled irresponsible brat you are oh cry me a river budd. when was the last time i made fun of your age or health. as for you faith i still think that you are just trying to buy fire insurance because nobody with true faith that i know acts the way that you do. why that could only be you tom. all the evidence is against you tom. someday you will get past the denial stage and realize that you are every bit as bad as you accuse me of being. well i didnt want to get dragged back into this with you and i did. my error but unlike you i dont claim to be perfect and now im done with it again. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

still shows well below the top of the safe zone right about where it was last time it overheated and i looked at it... looked inside the cap looks like brown oil to me same on the dipstick but im no expert. both look like what i see on my mustang popped the hood for comparisson. couple ways. look at the oil on your dip stick. if its cloudy milky or gray colored youve got water/coolant in it. run the engine for a minute then shut off and take the oil fill cap off the valve cover and look down in. again if water is in the oil it will look murky. your oil level may appear to rise too. japhar81 wrote how japhar81 wrote yeah it was normal last time it overheated 2 weeks ago. today it seems to be at the exact same level but its dark and im using a flashlight. will double-check tomorrow in the am when the sun is out. i also didnt notice any oil in the reservoir... maybe the temp. sensor gasket is leaking check your oil for coolant in it. .

tbone wrote tbone wrote you could simply say and you did that its nowhere near as bad as they are claiming where did i say this lol is this spin by deletion now talk about spin here. you made the claim i asked you where and you reply with your usual spin and duck. kinda figured this is how youd reply. oh so predictable. yet more spin by deletion including my answer. as you say oh so predictable. 5. 1800 people died from 1973 to 2000 in vehicle related fires 20x that of the famed ford pinto. but 1800 didnt die because of a design defect. and you can prove that how btw where are the other 4 facts that back this one up. oh thats right spin by deletion. this is where your facts turn to opinions. really i have yet to see any of your opinions backed by any facts at all. many accidents result in fires. here you go with that word many again like the many full time 4x4 that use solenoids to engage the front drive and when asked for a list got nothing back at all. how many per model miles and in what types of accidents. you keep making these general statements back a few of them up. some from design some not. one lawyer says all 1800 one lawyer says hardly any. somewhere inbetween is the truth. but to say your statements are fact is absurd. lol all vehicle fires are due to design in some way. the side mounted tanks was a stupid idea and resulted in 1800 people dying or at minimum guaranteed that they could not be saved regardless of their actual injuries. btw they are not my statements. nope not my conclusion. the conclusion of experts in the field and the fact that so many of these trucks burned where others in similar situations didnt. got it yet miles here ya go again. your original rant wasnt whether these tanks were safe or not. no it wasnt. you are spinning so fast that you are confusing yourself. hell you even tried to use the example of the location in some jeeps as also unsafe so you knew it was about the location. you whined about my statement saying lawyers on both sides were corrupt. you didnt say that either. you said that i only agree with the lawyers on my side. i said that the lawyers on both sides were corrupt and that because of it no good came for the consumers. you whined when i stated the number of deaths attributable to poor gas tank placement presented by them are not facts at all but rather opinions. bs. since you are so eager to argue about something you spun it such that the discussion is about whether the placement was safe or not. lol you keep accusing me of pointless arguments but here you are again. the discussion as well as the lawsuit was due to unsafe placement. my initial argument if you want to call it that was simply questioning budds reasoning. i knew many had died in these trucks due to the placement of the fuel tanks and thought that just about everybody around at that time did as well and was wondering why when budd brought it up he said that is wasnt that bad. when he took the immature path of attack instead of simply explaining that he was unaware of the actual deaths this crap began. since you keep coming back over and over with your edited posts we can all see who the one wanting to continue pointless arguments really is. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

on the few ocassions of a stripped stud it takes a few minutes to re-thread them. and if its pretty bad it doesnt take long to put a new stud in. at the shops i worked at none of the experienced techs stripped or broke and studs. now thats just plain stupid. a stud or any threaded fastener with damaged threads which are then chased re-threaded has less than 50% of its original strength. doesnt it matter that peoples lives depend on the quality of your work personally if you did that in my shop youd be looking for a new job. usually the minor crossthreads are the first 2-3 threads thats when the newbie techs try to air impact them on instead of starting the thread by hand. depending on the vehicle i just get a matching good lug nut and just fix the damage threads. the repaired threads are usually far enough into the lug nut as not to reduce its strength. the crossthreads that occur when dirty threads are impacted are the onces that gets replaced. i also did brakes and alignments if i see that it needs it i tell the customer. unauthorized work i should restate that statement. im also the brake and alignment tech ase certs on brakes/steering/suspension/ac/cooling/electrical the key phrase is i tell the customer that it needs to be done and i walk him over to see it. i also do front end shake downs while the car is on the lift tires still on to check suspension components. that would be part of the front alignment wouldnt it btw each type of front suspension has specific procedures for doing suspension component inspections properly. just shaking tires isnt the way to do it. grab the front end of the tire and shake side to side for loose play tie rods grab the top end of the tire and shake in and out upper ball joints same with the bottom end lower ball joints turn the tire left and right for strut bearings. this can all be done while waiting for the stockboy to bring the new tires. brake work is where i make the most $$. if you do one side ya gota do the other... sez who ive done brake repair jobs where a less qualified mechanic had screwed things up on one side and only that side needed work. i gave the customer the option of replacing the slightly used shoes on the opposite side tossing them in their trunk or letting me use them on another customers car. usually they would have me check the other brake and replace the shoe. if they didnt want the shoes they got a cost reduction and another person saved bucks on a one side shoe set to get them thru an inspection. my paycheck does... i refuse to do only one side liability. if you work on one side of the brakes and the other side fails guess whos responsible. a caliper that still works and has over 120k miles and a customer only wants to replace the other one that is sticking. 2 months down the road the one that wasnt changed decides to stick bad enough to cause steering problems. same with rear drum wheel cylinders if one leaks replace both left and right. if a customer refuses then i explain about the liability. i also write it down on the work order that customer refuses service. this has saved my ass a few times. btw this was my experience working at pep boys and speedy mufflers. ntb and other tire specialist shops normally have better techs. ah now that explains much . . . .high school trained off the street help. i was almost under the impression you were talking about real mechanics. as i mentioned i do have my expired ase certs. all i need is the shop manuals to fix anything also trained at the once you dont want a master mechanic doing tires he will make more mistakes than a tech that only does tires. wanna bet who do you think did them before techs came along the apprentice mechanic on his way to becoming a master mechanic. it was part of the learning process. but i also knew many master mechanics that did change tires in their own service stations because the apprentice was out pumping gas. this is my personal observation. ive seen two of our master mechanics do the same mistake. each one had their turn on forgetting to tighten the lug nuts. the shop paid for the damages. also the shop paid for a new engine when another master mechanic forgot to tighten the oil drain bolt. -a|ex .

if your truck is a long wheel base model you will have a 2 piece drive shaft. if so check yout center bearing on the drive shaft or an associated u joint. steve hello all i am the proud new owner of a 1998 1500 ram 4x4. the truck has low miles for the year 71000 and is in very good shape overall. however one issue that i cant seem to resolve on my own is a growling noise while driving. it seems to happen when driving up steady inclines at around 50-51 mph although it has happened at higher speeds too. if i immediately let up on the gas pedal the noise goes away and if i then accelerate through that speed it doesnt seem to happen again until i settle back into that zone we have a few 50 mph roads around here that find me driving in that zone fairly often. at first it sounded like a vibrating cowling or something like that but after hearing it a few times i sense that it is meatier than that almost like gears not quite meshing. it seems to eminate from underneath the truck somewhere behind the cab. does anyone have any ideas on this thanks in advance... .

yeah it was normal last time it overheated 2 weeks ago. today it seems to be at the exact same level but its dark and im using a flashlight. will double-check tomorrow in the am when the sun is out. i also didnt notice any oil in the reservoir... maybe the temp. sensor gasket is leaking how do you know and what does that usually cost blown head gasket. get out your checkbook. japhar81@gmail.com writes all i have a 95 ram 2500 v8 magnum about 120k miles.. about two weeks ago the temp gauge went nuts and almost redlined. i found my coolant reservoir almost empty. i topped off the radiator and the reservoir while engine was dead-cold and everything was peachy again. today 2 weeks later the temp was fine this morning but on my way home 20 mile drive spiked again and i found the reservoir empty. i dont think its leaking i didnt see any drippage or anything after it sat a full night in the driveway but then again antifreeze evaporates pretty quick... anyone have any thoughts before i take it to a dealer hell even if i need to take it in id like to have something useful to tell them... help! have you checked your oil level roy .
