93 Dakota trouble code 12

Q: id appreciate some insight from anyone in the know about this engine. how do they deactivate the four non-contributing cylinders the cylinders are deactivated by shutting off the oil supply to the lifters on the effected cylinders while also shutting off the fuel/spark. is it always the same four or do they shift it around in order to spread the wear always the same four mopar claims no excessive wear occurs because of the repetive cycling. when does the deactivation occur when the engine is under a light load. can the feature be manually locked out no but dont be surprised if the aftermarket starts offering chips to allow the driver to control the function. any known issues yet i havent heard of any. i remember the cadillac 8-6-4 system from years ago it was a pos throw-away engine. twenty plus years of advancements in computers/technology make the comparison moot. .

first of all plug wires can look fine and still be bad. if it has a distributor i would first change the distributor cap and rotor. if it has different spark coils for the cylinders i would check them as follows first locate the coils in the light. then with the engine at normal operating temperature in a dark location the darker the better look at the coils and see if you see any sparking or arcing at or near the coils. if so replace both all coils even if only one is suspect because if one is bad the others isnt arent far behind. my 99 4 cyl caravan 91000 miles runs rough-like not getting gas or bad plugshad a tune up changed 4 plugs new pcv valve new arifitler new fuel filter- plug wires look fine... dont know what else to do... any advise thanks michael .

the timing chain was my primary concern but i didnt want to mention it so people would respond without my putting that goblin in their mind. ill certainly check it and may just go ahead and replace it and the water pump. i carry most of the stuff you mentioned but will go ahead and purchase a wheel bearing now. as always good information and thanks. .

chris thanks for the response. comments/questions below... chris thompson kf4drr-nospam@alltel.net wrote in anybody know what front-end alignment adjustments are possible on an 03 dakota of course toe but what about caster & camber according to the factory service manual there are still camber and caster adjustments on the 4wd and 2wd trucks as i suspected. i havent worked on the suspension of the dr trucks so i had to look to be absolutively sure do you know if caster/camber adjustment requires shims or is it simply adjusting existing components also for any service folks whats up with a 4-wheel alignment from the dealer my invoice listed a 4-wheel alignment. even though i paid the advertised price on my discount coupon $49.95 is this just a scam to jack up the cost of a rwd front end alignment tia. your 4 wheel alighnment should actually be a thrust angle alighnment there are no adjustments on a leaf spring suspension in the rear but you can measure the thrust angle or the way the rear end sits in the vehicle and adjust the front end to compensate your actually alighning the car to the way it gets pushed down the road. i hope that answers your question on 4 wheel alighnments. indeed. i get the point about the thrust angle alignment but i guess the point is that theres no real adjustment to the rear. the thrust angle is what it is. any/all adjustments are to the front end only. regards joe .
