93 Dakota Transfer Case Woes

From : john mcgaw

Q: it looks like the transfer case on my truck is failing. at first it seemed like the noise might have been coming from a cv joint but a local shop was kind enough to put it up on the lift and the noise definitely seems to be the case. the mechanic described it as chain slap and then went on to describe some horror stories about these things failing at speed and literally blowing the side of the case out. anybody have any experience in this just to be prepared ive been checking around for rebuilt cases online and the prices seem to range from $760-$900 core charges $150-$350 and around $130-$150rt shipping. does this seem reasonable im going to check for local suppliers too but havent had the chance yet. any big rebuilders that are especially good/bad ive found a local small repair shop that will change it out not quite shade tree mechanics but not far from it but ive not heard any complaints about them. tia -- john mcgaw knoxville tn usa http//johnmcgaw.com .
