86 1/2 ton rear axle seal leaks

Q: i have a 1986 dodge that needs a new seal and bearings on the left axle. do i need to remove the differential cove to do this or will removing the brake shoe retainer allow me to remove the axle. any help would be appreciated. thanks bob .

those trucks all had c clips on the axles removeable by removing the rear housing cover. it is a semi floating design bearing this means that if the bearing is bad the bearing surface on the axle is likely bad also and the axle will have to be replaced if you dont understand this go to your local library and look in the reference section in a hard cover motors manual or hard cover chiltons i have a 1986 dodge that needs a new seal and bearings on the left axle. do i need to remove the differential cove to do this or will removing the brake shoe retainer allow me to remove the axle. any help would be appreciated. thanks bob a dyslexic man walks into a bra. .

axle. do i need to remove the differential cove to do this or will removing the brake shoe retainer allow me to remove the axle. any help would be appreciated. yep - cover comes off remove the center pin in the differential slide the axles in about 1/2 remove the c clip then you can yank the axle out. make sure you dont let anything turn when doing this or the spider gears will spit out. not a huge deal if they do but they can be a little tricky to put back in place. if youre going to replace the bearings and you dont have a factory-approved axle bearing installation tool measure the depth of the old bearing inside the tube first before you pull it out so you can set the new bearings at the same location. just one of many reasons why full-floating axles are better to have/work on .
