errr... at the risk of sounding really stupid you havent inadvertently turned off the overdrive function have you that would almost exactly account for the missing fuel. smamott@hotmail.com writes i have a 1999 ram with a 318 auto and 180 000 kms. recently the truck started using tons of fuel. its maintenance has been kept up and i am the original owner. recently took to dodge dealer and was checked on their computer. it showed their was no codes. the 02 sensor comes up as being fine. the truck shows no changes in performance just fuel economy. the truck is burning aprox 1/4 tank per 50 miles. any ideas .

thanks for the help tom. i really appreciate it. happy holidays! man i wanted to send you a private email but couldnt figure out what letters to take out of that email address. on wed 22 dec 2004 165545 gmt tom lawrence tnloaswpraemnmcien5g@earthlink.net wrote solenoid. does your torque converter go into lockup i dunno. the automatic transmission thing is lost on me. im a motorcycle guy. how do i tell okay... get it up to highway speed. note your engine rpms. now depress the throttle about 3/4 of the way down. if the rpms stay where they were and only rise slightly as you accelerate then your torque converter is locked. if the rpms immediately rise 200-300rpm or more then your converter was unlocked. also while cruising at highway speeds lightly tap the brake pedal for an instant not enough to actually apply any braking force - just enough to get the brake lights to come on. if your converter was locked this will unlock it and you should notice an increase in rpms. if there isnt any increase your torque converter wasnt locked up. so if its really the sensor then the tranny needs to be opened to make the repair the pan needs to be removed but thats about it. the whole job should take about an hour. ** due to spam i no longer receive email responses to ** group postings so dont bother. .

two words gear lube this is pretty much a completely neglected maintenance item on vehicles and i would think there is a good chance it has the original gear lube from the factory still. you didnt mention if it was 4wd or 2wd so here are the capacities for the vehicle in case your owners manual is missing or destroyed. you can visit the vehicle application guide on my website to get the correct lube weights for your vehicle as well. i didnt post them because they are amsoil products and didnt want to get flamed for posting an adv. however the weights should apply to any brand lube you go with. if you arent sure which differential you have check in the glove box for a sticker with the details. capacities engine turbowithout filter..........10.0 quarts cooling system initial fill..........24.0 quarts automatic transmission initial fill..........4.0 quarts1 automatic transmission 46rh initial fill..........4.0 quarts1 automatic transmission 47rh initial fill..........4.0 quarts12 automatic transmission total fill 3 speed ..........8.6 quarts 4 speed ..........11.0 quarts manual transmission nv3500..........4.2 pints manual transmission ax-15..........6.5 pints manual transmission getrag g-360..........7.0 pints manual transmission nv4500..........8.0 pints differential with 7.25 ring gear front..........3.0 pints3 differential 2wd with dana 60 rear..........6.3 pints3 differential 2wd with dana 70 rear..........7.0 pints differential 2wd with dana 80 rear..........6.8 pints4 differential 4wd with dana 60 rear..........7.2 pints5 differential 4wd with dana 70 rear..........7.6 pints differential 4wd with dana 80 rear..........10.0 pints differential with dana 60 front..........6.3 pints6 transfer casenp231 233..........2.5 pints transfer casenp241hd..........6.5 pints transfer casenp241..........4.6 pints dan benedix howling motor sports www.howlingmotorsports.com an independant amsoil dealer view our new online quote tool! its fast easy and actually kind of fun i have just acquired a 94 ram 2500 with a manual tranny and the cummins 5.9l diesel engine. the truck has about 250000 miles on it runs well but im not sure of its maintenance history. if i take it to a garage for inspection/evaluation what things should they and i be looking for with respect to the engine here are two or three pressing questions id appreciate some help with 1 how do these diesel engines wear and what tests can be done to evaluate the engines condition are things like compression tests or leakdown tests meaningful in this case 2 without knowing anything about the engine aside from its mileage what servicing should i plan to have done aside from the obvious light maintenance like oil filters cooling system flush etc. im thinking about things like injector cleaning or replacement tranny flush and such. 3 aside from the engine what else on the truck should i be focusing on i know enough to answer these questions for gasoline engines but diesels are a new thing for me. i would be very grateful for any advice from experienced owners. ive inherited this truck and would like to keep and use it for a long time. my goal is to find out what kind of shape its in and learn enough to make some wise decisions about repairing and maintaining it. thanks - magnusfarce .

was it related to the power steering system did it get worse as you turned the steeing back and fourth if so flush the system i have a 2004 dakota 4x4 with a v8 engine and automatic trans. the other morning when the temp. was 18 f this is the first time it has been that cold this year in fayetteville nc it made the weirdest noise when revving the engine. it was a high pitched squeak or like finger nails on a black board and fairly loud. at first i though it was the radio but it came from under the hood. a good title for a horror movie after the car warmed up the sound disappeared. it had never done this before. seems to be a cold weather phenomena. anybody have a similar experience or idea what is going on its just plain weird. dave not related to steering. did it at rest and on accerelation. the truck isnt that old. it only has about 4000 miles on it. dave. .

thanx tbone. i will check it out. could well be the problem. all i have to do is figure out how to remove the switch without tearing up the steering column. - that sounds more like a failed ignition stitch. if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving the electric system has completely shut down. nothing works in on or start position. clock light comes on in accessories position. the battery is fully charges and i can find no blown fuses. im wondering if this means the computer has gone out. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. ----------------------- = wake up america = .
