Q: a swing out spare is a pain in the neck; you have to mess with it every time you open the hatch. but if you want one have one custom made. what you want is a gate style spare carrier that put all the weight on the bumper and not on the body. -- .bob amen to that. my 92 dodge w250 had that problem. bought and tried every hitch i could and none fit. so i took it to a guy that makes hitches and paid $135 for a real hitch. almost all hitches for my dodge are really ford hitches. they just happen to fit a dodge if you want to relocate the spare. al .

my 2004 4.7 quadcab 4x2 gets about 15 commuting on a short 5 mile one way trip. worst mileage was 12 towing 4700 pounds across the mountains in tn coming back without the trailer i got my best at 20.5 going 70 average speed. just took a 1000 mile trip this weekend pulling a pop-up camper got 15 heading into a 20 knot headwind at 70 mph coming back got 17.5 with a 10 knot tailwind going 65. hope this helps. john rq wrote i am thinking of buying a dakota but i hear that they are real gas hogs. is this consistant with the experience of the members of this groups thanks rq .
