have a 2003 ram ext cab with 4.7l engine. on cold mornings ill notice a surging when i first start up. doesnt last more than a minute or two but that coupled with about 15 mpg combined makes me wonder if i should take it in for warranty check. or is this normal gary i have a 2003 dodge dakota quad cab with the 4.7 and mine does the same thing. not all the time but usually when im just creeping up to a stop sign i can feel it surge. i know this isnt an answer but yours isnt the only one doing it .

ive heard of that before....i cant remember when i read it though. i believe it was the way to chain certain 4wd or maybe awd vehicles if you didnt have chains for all the tires. i barely remember the article so i may be wrong on 3 mar 2004 083332 -0800 proteusdiver@hotmail.com stelios grigoriou wrote you want some real weirdness when my kid was in korea the army had a policy of putting chains on 2 wheels of the humvees... left front and right rear!! you really only need the chains on the rear wheels to satisfy the legal requirements. youll get better traction if the chains are on all 4 wheels but the ride will beat you to death and handeling will suck. so just put them on the rear tires put it in 4h and drive a little slower. sorry but i have to disagree... if you drive in 4h or 4l or awd for that matter you have to have chains on all wheels since chains drastically change the performance of the wheels they are on. driving with chains in only one axle in 4x4 mode will get very very interesting. there is also the debate of putting the one set of chains in the front axle since you need the traction mostly for steering but since chains are fairly inexpensive by all means if you need to use chains do it the proper way. in my experience the question is if you have to stop and get out of your truck to put the chains on. if you do it putting on a second set is just 5 minutes more of your time... you already are outside and wet anyway... do not forget to stop and adjust the chains after about 200 yards of travel and then check them from time to time for looseness. a loose chain in the right wrong circumstances can wreck havoc in your front system. do not go fast with the chains on... mac .

| - i dont have a torque wrench but i can sufficiently tighten a bolt |or nut by feel with no problems. is a torque wrench a life-or-death |requirement to do this im thinking in particular of | |....the pinion shaft retaining bolt |....the differential cover bolts |....the bolts holding on the disc brake calipers go buy or rent one. over torqueing the diffcover will make it leak overtorquing the crosspin retaining bolt can cause it to snap the torque for them is suprisingly low. the bolts for the calipers usually only need in the 30ftlbs range but theyre not nearly as sensative to overtorquing. since you guys are so helpful and knowledgeable would you happen to know just what the torque specs are for those three bolts ive scoured the internet and cant find it anywhere. ron m. .
