2003 RAM: Consumer reports bashing? Reality?

Q: yum wrote drawthrough one word turbo-lag. air has mass and therefore cant accelerate instantly. add fuel to the flow and you get more lag plus severe separation. blow-thru systems have little or no turbo-lag and the fuel isnt added until later in the flow. even then with pressure blowing it along it stays in suspension better. o-ring the heads the turbo is much gentler to the combustion process than a roots or wormgear blower mainly because of the air temp. o-ringing is a costly procedure unless you have the equipment to do your own. you only need super high boosts for all out racing not streets. roots at 17 lbs of boost is around 600 degrees. turbo at 31 lbs of boost is around 225 degrees with intercooling. blow-thru turbo at 15 psi has negligible temp increase and since you are not passing fuel thru an intercooler much less likely to blow up. water injection also adds to keeping the heads from breaking. have you really researched water injection its for detonation pinging control. if you ran enough boost to break heads even aluminum ones youd be running into detonation probs even with only a 21 compression ratio. what cam profile are you trying to run budd inventor. so tell us how you keep the 4 bolt-per-cylinder heads from blowing gaskets is this a blow-thru or draw-thru set up i see more crap here than info. yum wrote i use to turbo-charge 340 motors. about 1600 hp and 2200 ft lbs. just drop the compression to 6to1 360 degree piston rings dry sump oil system milodon girdle drill the oil passages and add crossover line 2 t-04 turbos ak miller manafold swap the manafolds side to side weld turbo boxes on the manafolds 1100 cfm dominator holly set waste gate to 31 lbs boost and hold on tight. fits nice in a duster. inventor. .

you sure are setting your sights high. i think chimpyboy should be flipping the burgers. its closer to his skill level. of course hed have to compete with all those teenagers looking for work so his chances would not be good. getting an education doesnt mean shit if your company moves to taiwan. %%%% yes it does. you need to be able to do more than just glue widgets together or run a column of figures. oh tell that to the thousands of degreed professionals who are now jobless. is absolute zero the temperature of your heart btw we dont have any widget jobs anymore; just wart mart greeters %%%% is being a degreed professional all that they know or is it all they are willing to do ive pumped gas at a service station and flipped burgers with a degree because the money i was getting was more than i would receive sitting on my ass feeling sorry because i didnt have the job i wanted. i had a family to feed and not the time to sit and whine. i guess that is the way i was brought up to be self reliant and not depend on others. .

ajfoot wrote would you agree with the 2003 ram totally negative cr report its an interesting contradiction. i saved the summary here to review http//www.emcreg.org/staging/ram2003.pdf never ever buy the first year of a redesign or of a vehicle debut. well you can if you want but be warned. there may be flaws but the first year usually represents a best effort for its time. subsequent years get more cost-cutting measures applied. .

if the engine is built then i wouldnt expect good gasmileage. not with a whole hell of a lot of work. and the engine idleing rough might be because of an aftermarket cam. details 1988 dodge truck moter had been rebuilt 2 owners ago mild cam rochester quadrajet modified dual pickup ignition my friend had bought a dodge truck a couple of years back and has had problems with it since she bought it. she had taken it many places for tune ups oil changes ect but some problems have always remained poor idle wouldnt pass emmissions and high gas usage. i decided to look at it myself lately. first addressed the the carberator because she had just got it tuned up. it smelt of gas after turning off used alot of fuel rough starting cold & hot ok acceleration. i got a rebuilding kit took it apart and realized it was custom built it was supposed to have an electronic pump but was replaced with a mechanical one and the airhorn assembly was not the one for that style of body the front vac break assm. cannot open the secondary butterfly fully. i replaced the needle float ect put it back together and it still idles rough although it is eaisier starting and the gas smell has gone. i am going to get another carb we are not interested in preformance so much as economy so i was thinking of getting a used complete quadrajet from a junkyard or does someone recomend an aftermarket i priced the quad at a junkyard for 45.00 an aftermaket holley is 385.00 since the idle was still rough i checked spark plugs they were very worn and carbonized one wire fell apart and they all looked pretty old so i replaced all of them with the plugs since these two components were so bad i checked the distributor cap and roter both pitted very badly so i changed them as well i dont know what kind of tune up was done but i am going to ask after this i notice a defanate change in the overall operation but the idle is still rough like it is missing as before. i got a timing light and checked it. it is no where near the timing scale the if you can amagine the timing mark being at 200 the crank indicator at idle is at 400 turning thr distributor i can get it to about 300 and it hardly wants to run this is advancing it when i rev it up the mark moves advances but sill not even close. the correct timing is 12 deg i think it had mechanical and vacume advance i have checked for vac leaks and found none i did however applied manual vac to the vacume advance and it did not move and i couldnt get a vacume on it is it bad so can anyone tell me 1 how or why the timing mark is so wacked out could someone installed somthing incorrectly 2 how can it be put it in time should i rotate the motor till #1 is tdc and make my oun mark 3 can the carb still be way off and can it effect the timing any help will be greatly appritiated nickpo@comcast.net tb800@comcast.net .

george bush wrote does any produce after market steering shaft for the older dodge four wheel drive pickups my shaft is in pretty bad shape. i ordered a new coupler kit from dodge but the end of the shaft and the coupler is pretty beat. does any body recondition these shafts i want to put some type of lift on the truck. what happens to the steering shaft if it is a body lift any help would be appreciated aarcuda borgeson http//www.borgeson.com/ and flaming river http//www.flamingriver.com/ and i think a few more. i bought a borgeson for my 92 w150 power ram and i am happy with it. it is probably the same shaft your truck takes. i think there about $190 through summit racing or other similar companies. -dave 91 dodge ram d150 92 dodge ram w150 http//www.geocities.com/matt4982/mytruck.html .

david burton wrote hi i have a 96 cummins diesel manual tranny truck and recently the cruise control began to refuse to engage though it turns on the abs light comes on and the ebrake light comes on. the abs and ebrake lights sometimes stay off for a while after starting up 1-10minutes but the cruise always refuses to engage. the vacuum is good and the brake pedal switch is good and properly adjusted. what else could this be ebrake switch or the clutch pedal switch would cause the cc to not engage. .

why just under warranty isnt the crank sensor a 100000-mile engine warranty item rick -- my real e-mail address is yofuri@oakharbor.net my 98 2500 cummins qc 4x4 was built in st louis also. snip 59998 miles replaced crank sensor just under warranty snip craig madigan wrote would you agree with the 2003 ram totally negative cr report ive got a 03 ram 1500 regular cab 5.7l hemi with 7000 miles built 12/02 in st. louis mo. so far - both doors not closing properly adjusted at 1500 miles - front brake rotors warped and replaced at 6000 miles - passenger side door seal worn out replaced at 7500 miles - 20 factory wheels needed rebalancing three times already i think all of the above are things that should not happen to a brand new vehicle unless there is a serious quality control/design problem. but oh well its a domestic truck and the hemi kicks a$$ .

replace your coil. warm yes...too hot to touch no. ands make sure its wired correctly . . negative side to the ignition module. budd pig bruce wrote i appreciate all the help. i have been unable to find a competent mechanic at any price. they all say either it is too old or they dont have the facilities to store it. it would have to stay at the mechanics shop for several days because the problem is so inconsistent. back in february after installing the electric fuel pump and other parts it was fine for several months. i do have one other clue. the coil does get very hot even though it is located on the outside of the engine compartment. is this normal it gets so hot it would burn you.the ballost resistor has been changed its only getting 9 volts. the battery is not being overcharged.does anybody know a mechanic in my area that could help i live in sw fla ft myers area.i would be glad to pay top wage for someone that could help. it seems maybe one of these mopar high performance guys would be familar with this engine. thanks again to all. bruce ft myers fla .
