Q: ramman wrote thanks for all the replies! ive sort of given up on help from the dealership. more info 2001 ram 1500 v8 5.9 42k miles. it happens when im in temperatures below 50. i can pull out of a parking lot hit the streets and once im up to about 40 mph it starts. it continues on to the highway and at highway speeds. engine hot or cold it doesnt matter. i thought of even a rfi noise since there have been reports http//www.realhamradio.com/dodgerampickup.htm but have eliminated that. it doesnt happen at idle or in park at any rpms. it does vary with throttle accelerator setting to the extent that it will stop for a moment if i slightly increase or decrease rpm. as for idler pulley water pump bearing fan clutch i dont think so. its definitely a whistle not a squeal or whine. the reason im thinking of the fuel pump is that it seems to be temperature related. it does sound like a vacuum problem and a vacuum noise but i cant relate that to temperature differences. this may or may not be what the problem is. but i had the same whistle on my 01 ram qc at highway speeds. drove me nuts until i found out that the rubber molding under the hood near the cowling vents near windshield wipers was coming off on one side. i super glued it back on and the whistle went away. i too thought it was coming from the engine. check to see if your rubber is loose. g bob -- that big fan is to cool the pilot. watch how much he sweats when it stops. .
