bonenospam@nc.rr.com says... open rears tend to favor one axle but i forgot which one. driveshaft torque tends to lift the right rear wheel. drag racers often use assymetric shock/spring/traction bar/ tire pressure setups to accomodate the effect. independent suspension doesnt have this quirk. .

steve wrote scott aleckson wrote i had the overdrive section of my auto transmission in this truck turn into a nice soupy mixture of metal shavings awhile back. since the truck had about 130k on it and the engine was getting tired i ordered up a rebuilt v6 and tranny from aftermarket sources. the tranny i received was date stamped as an 89 model but except for different sized fittings for the cooling lines everything appeared to fit the same and it went back together just fine and is running. ive rebuilt many engines but ive never really gotten into auto transmissions before but here are the symptoms of a problem that has come up. the truck holds a lower gear for way too long. when in drive the rpms go to near red-line without shifting. to force a shift it is necessary to get the speed up then let off the gas pedal a bit. at highway speeds it runs just fine so this issue only appears at low speeds. the second part of this problem is that the speedo now reads low. before the transmission change my gps showed a perfect match to the speedometer now it is reading about 5mph slow at highway speeds. if it were a standard tranny i would say that it is geared taller than the stock one was. any tranny guys out there who can provide some pointers on where to start with correcting this problem im hoping it is some simple tuning stuff so that i dont have to take her to a tranny shop to do it. hate to pay other people money to take care of mechanical stuff ya know. it was quite a bear to get that tranny in there in the first place... tia scott is the carburetor-to-transmission or throttle body-to-transmission rod or cable connected to the accelerator linkage if not the transmission has no throttle position reference and thinks you have the gas floored all the time or somewhere near floored. that would have nothing to do with the speedometer not reading correctly- that would be an incorrect or incorrectly installed speedometer pinion in the transmission tailshaft. yes this linkage is present and adjusted. i adjusted it exactly by the book when i installed it yes i have the shop manual. i did notice that there is a lot of lateral play in this linkage. when installing it i was thinking they would have been better off using a flexible cable linkage instead of the bent steel bar. i will double check this linkage and maybe try sliding it a bit one way or the other to see what effect that has on the shifting. thanks. .

due to the tortion from the drive shaft torque. torsion is a bar with one fixed end and one leveraged end. thechassis will twist ever so slightly just watch the super stock drag races you will notice some of the cars twisting under the hard acceleration. yup but on the street many other factors enter in. with traction at both wheels under acceleration the lsd will enguage a clutch that forces the two wheels to spin at the same speed. wrong. a lsd diff always has these clutches engaged due to a constant spring pressure. arder acceleration more force on the clutch. wrong. the more difference in axle speed from one side to the other the more likely the lsd will slip unless one of those tires loses traction. the key to whether or not the lsd allows slip is how much traction each tire has. if both tires have more friction at the pavement than the lsd has in clutch friction the lsd will allow a differential in axle speed. if one of those tires loses friction to the point where the lsd clutches have more friction than that tire then the lsd stops slipping and effectively but not really locks the axles together. if you are coasting there is less force and it acts as an open diff through the turn. pure bullshit. once one wheel loses traction there is no resistance and the clutch disenguages no fun when your rock crawling wrong. this is a limited slip differential it cannot disengage under any circumstance unless it fails altogether. it will either slip or not slip. if too much power is applied through a turn then clutch will enguage and not let the inner wheel spin slower. wrong. in a lsd it never disengages. most the weight is on the outside tire anyways and if you are going through a turn so fast that the loss of traction of the inside wheel puts you into a spin maybe you should slow down anyways perhaps..... seasons first light rain half warn tires and a good stomp in the gas through a turn and the ass end will fish tail every time. perhaps you should grip the steering wheel and use it. it a straight line if i am stopped at a light in the rain and the drive tires are on the paint on the road then i cant jab the gas. i have to accelerate like a normal driver. maybe you should try accelerating like a normal driver more often. my truck also slips on the painted lines but i never come close to losing control. max anvils dont kill cartoon characters cartoon characters kill cartoon characters. .
