2000 durango help

Q: got in the truck today battery dead...never a problem before...got jump started while driving the check guages warning light came on and the voltmeter was pinned on 18...and the odometer lights were flickering... got it home cleaned the battery terminals jumped it stayed running meter and lights fine..shut it off again nothing..next jump start lights on dash flickering voltmeter ok but the truck wouldnt stay running.... any ideas would be appreciated ! thanks ray .

probably an internal shorted battery. hopefully you didnt smoke the alternator once the battery went south when you kept running it. james .
