code 38 / p0740 is torque converter clutch control circuit failure what it means is that the tcm commanded a converter clutch lock-up and the tcm did not see the same rpm reading on the iss input speed sensor as the engine rpm thereafter might be the converter might be solenoid pack might be a stuck valve in the valve body might be a bad wire from tcm to solenoid pack might be the tcm itself; possibly although this would probably generate wrong gear ratio codes too the input speed sensor id first unplug and re-plug the connectors both at the tcm and the transmission also the input speed sensor connector sorry torque converter if if is a 2000 and under 80k miles the catalytic converter is still under the emmisions warranty. ck engine light code 700 & 740. dealer says code 38 needs a new converter. is there anyway that this is just a bad senser the van runs and shifts fine. cant get a state inspection sticker w/ the check engine light on. joe texas .

fwiw there is an updated package of 2 plugs plus splices and heat-shrink available from the dealer will fit both input and output sensors on 91-97; part number 4419478 for 98 up you need to order them separately; input connector is 5014469aa; output is 5014471aa thanks for that very smart answer. it was the speed senser plug. by being located right next to the dipstick tube whenever the trans fluid is checked drops of fluid drip down on that plug connector. it was an oily mess and my light hasnt come on any more. transurgeon i owe you a six pack mi amigo cbhvac pull the code dont let the screen door hit-ya where the good lord split-ya.......... joe texas how does a guy go about figureing out what is kicking the light on it does lock up. you pull the code... a 604 will lock up in 3........in fact it will stay locked up on coast-down for engine braking so i doubt that leaving it in 3 will solve your problem got em so if i leave it in 3 instead of drive and the converter never gets the command to lock up will my check engine light stay off till i can get a new sticker tomorrow well thats my plan anyway. how long does it take for the computer to cycle thru a few times also was my dealer going to replace my convereter then trouble shoot the electrical problem to get the light to stay off thanks by the way for your huge help on this... joe tcm is on the right inner fencer or the firewall input speed sensor is on transmission near the dipstick tube 2 wires ill try that today. when im driveing it does drop 200 rpm when the converter locks in. so i think its working correctly. p.s. where is the tcm and the speed sensor code 38 / p0740 is torque converter clutch control circuit failure what it means is that the tcm commanded a converter clutch lock-up and the tcm did not see the same rpm reading on the iss input speed sensor as the engine rpm thereafter might be the converter might be solenoid pack might be a stuck valve in the valve body might be a bad wire from tcm to solenoid pack might be the tcm itself; possibly although this would probably generate wrong gear ratio codes too the input speed sensor id first unplug and re-plug the connectors both at the tcm and the transmission also the input speed sensor connector sorry torque converter if if is a 2000 and under 80k miles the catalytic converter is still under the emmisions warranty. ck engine light code 700 & 740. dealer says code 38 needs a new converter. is there anyway that this is just a bad senser the van runs and shifts fine. cant get a state inspection sticker w/ the check engine light on. joe texas .
