1999 durango a/c
From : joe
Q: 1999 durango 5.9l with rear a/c. second owner. i hav been having cooling problems while running the a/c with temps outside close to 100f and in stop and go traffic. i have flushed the cooling system and put in a 180f t-stat. helped a little. checked/ cleaned radiator and condenser coils. they look good. a/c seems to work well. coolant temps still get uncomfortably hot over 210. no temp problem while running down the freeway. heard about a tsb 07-07-98 that replaces the fan and cowling.. anyone have more info thanks joe .

before i changed the t-stat and added water wetter the temp would climb to above 260. i havent let the thing sit very long at idle with the a/c on after i did the flush but even for a few minutes it still concerns me. it reached 210 and was still climbing and i turned it off. it has the stock belt drive fan and clutch. thanks joe .

also check to make sure your idle up components are working .. raises engine rpm when youre not moving with a/c on .. but it doesnt sound like theres very much wrong. i used a low pressure washer with a small nozzle that would fit between the radiator and the condenser coil dont bend the fins. the water came out fine in both directions. just a few bugs and grass. no blockage noted. the cooling system is factory stock. belt drive fan and cowling are complete. there is no auxiliary fan on this vehicle. i drove it around today air temp 99fwith both ac units on high. the system stays close to 180f as long as i keep it moving above about 25 mph. i parked in a lot with front and rear a/c units still on high. the temp climbed slowly past 240. took about 10 minutes. went out on the road again and it cooled right down to about 180f. both a/c still on. the temp remains nice and steady at 180f when the a/c is off. joe .

what are the symptoms of the problem water boils at 212f at sea level and radiators are capped to keep pressure on the system to allow the temperature in the radiator to go over 212f without the solution boiling. boiling causes cavitation of the pump doesnt pump good then due to the steam created and produces inefficient surface contact between the coolant and the radiator. 210f at sea level on a day of stop and go traffic with an outside air temp of 100f would be pretty normal statistics as far as i can tell .. is the vehicle doing something it shouldnt does your auxiliary fan come on and stay on when you turn the a/c on it should. do the problems unlisted go away when you turn the a/c off how about a little help here. i saw where someone found that a plastic bag had worked its way up between the a/c coil and the radiator .. and they just happened to find it .. does hose water come out the other side when you spray the radiator some cooling systems are difficult to get the air out of after they have been drained .. find the highest point on the heating system and put an air purge valve in it .. whatever works. a description of the symptoms would be a big help. the cowling would help but if it were necessary for your area for your vehicle to function properly everyone would have one from the git go. it should work the way you bought it unless youre towing 8 gazillion pounds at five mph if thats the case you should have bought a kenworth. are we getting anywhere here 1999 durango 5.9l with rear a/c. second owner. i hav been having cooling problems while running the a/c with temps outside close to 100f and in stop and go traffic. i have flushed the cooling system and put in a 180f t-stat. helped a little. checked/ cleaned radiator and condenser coils. they look good. a/c seems to work well. coolant temps still get uncomfortably hot over 210. no temp problem while running down the freeway. heard about a tsb 07-07-98 that replaces the fan and cowling.. anyone have more info thanks joe .

my personal list somebody put too much antifreeze in the coolant mixture if it doesnt get very cold where you live aim for 70% water 30% antifreeze. antifreeze has horrible thermal transfer qualities alone. fan clutch - the fan should have *significant* lag if you try to turn it after shutting the car down after a full warm-up. if it doesnt replace it. slipping serpentine belt - make sure the belt tension is good and the tensioner is in its normal range. check belt for cracks across the belt. some cracks in the ridges is fine.. crappy water pump - i guess it could get chewed up without an external leak if some solids were to make it into the coolant... dump in some redline water-wetter or equiv. increases the thermal conductivity of the coolant mixture without compromising system life. shoot it! ; js joe wrote i used a low pressure washer with a small nozzle that would fit between the radiator and the condenser coil dont bend the fins. the water came out fine in both directions. just a few bugs and grass. no blockage noted. the cooling system is factory stock. belt drive fan and cowling are complete. there is no auxiliary fan on this vehicle. i drove it around today air temp 99fwith both ac units on high. the system stays close to 180f as long as i keep it moving above about 25 mph. i parked in a lot with front and rear a/c units still on high. the temp climbed slowly past 240. took about 10 minutes. went out on the road again and it cooled right down to about 180f. both a/c still on. the temp remains nice and steady at 180f when the a/c is off. joe .
