Q: prowler99 camcopa2002@yahoo.com wrote my dad is retired now and wants to spend my inheritance on toys. he told me to shop for a utility tractor with a front loader and a back-hoe in the 18-30 hp range. we are looking at kubota and john deere as there are no other brand dealers within reasonable distance from us. does anyone have any experience with this type of small tractor. is the deere that much better than the kubota to justify the 30% price difference do the kubotas hold up under moderate usage any advice appreciated. randy hi randy i have a 1999 john deere 4200 hydrostatic with 4 wheel drive. it has a gross horsepower of 26 20 pto horsepower with a hydro. it would be similar to the newer model 4210 heres the website http//www.deere.com/enus/productcatalog/gc/servlet/com.deere.u90785.cce.pr oductcatalog.view.servlets.prodcatproductpnbr=129dlv1005&tm=gc&cnbr=gccut& scname=4000+ten+series+compact+utility+tractors i use mine with a 3pt hitch 72 mower 48 rototiller and a front mounted 48 snowblower. i also have a front end loader and use it occassionaly. its a comfortable tractor to operate and looks good. before i had three different kubotas all were very good. with regular service did not have do problems with all of them. had one brass o ring that was leaking on a hyd steel line. no other engine no hyd leaks a very good tractor. last one i had was a 1700 nice tractor. then they changed dealerships couldnt make a deal on a new kubota then switched to jd. john deere had to do a couple of factory updates to the transmission and something else. i was a little upset that they had to split a new tractor to replace a bad gear. after having kubotas with no problems i was wishing that i stayed with kubota. anyhow glad they did the update instead of having to do it after warranty runs out. still have a bit a seeping out between the seals or gaskets. little oil seeps from the engine that needs to be washed off occcasionally. but i still like the green machine. i havent kept up with the newer kubotas but i think their quality of workmanship is a tad better then a deere. kubota is more known for building heavier industrail equipment. heres a price for a demo jd 4210 four wheel drive dont say if its hydro reg $26500 now for $20750 randy get a hydrostatic no clutching or shifting just use the foot pedals. the deere has a better working platform more foot room. try to test drive each make out to see how you like the feel or layout of the levers etc. in my opinion both tractors are pretty good. if the kubota is way cheaper go for the kubota. good luck hope some of this info helps dale will try to answer any more questions .
