for the caravan 97 it will turn off after 50 engine restarts if the problem is corrected; additionally you can get the trouble codes by turning the ignition switch on - off - on - off - on in a five second period and count the pulse codes the engine light will blink a two digit number ie. blink blink - blink blink blink - - - blink blink blink blink - blink etc. = 23 and 41 the haynes or chilton manuals or maybe even online have the decoding info. gary glaenzer wrote scan tool hi all - does anybody know how to turn off the check engine light on a 1998 dodge ram -- i dont want to wait for it to turn off on its own. thanks dan -- derrik arenal operator ucdavis campus data center .

there is product named techton or techron not sure. its made by chevron and we can get it at wal-mart here for about $6 or so. it comes in a black plastic bottle. on it it says something like concentrated formula. there are other chevron products that say they have techtron in them things like fuel injector cleaner with techron in blue bottles i think. you need the concentrated formula. its specifically designed to attack carbon and is also sold by vw and bmw dealers usually at 2 to 4 times the price. its about the best product i ever used for removing carbon from valves. you may need two treatments. must do an oil change after the 2nd treatment. search for it on the web. it may help. fred on tue 15 jul 2003 163439 gmt neil nelson nonelson@sbcglobal.net wrote tbone wrote if you have the diagnostic tool why dont you just flush the codes before going to inspection becasue the obdii inspection program is not that naive. the pcm requires that a driving cycle be completed before the vehicle is ready for inspection. so far we have not been able to flush the codes and have them stayed flush before all the readiness monitors have completed their cycles. i think it is the egr cycle that takes the longest and the pcm always sets the misfire code before that cycle is completed. my scan tool is clever enough to monitor the cycles but not so clever that it can fake them out. regards ed white i think the obd2 3.0 liter mitsubishis are susceptible to carbon caked intake valves causing missfire codes. it might be worthwhile to have the intake removed and the valves and runners walnut shell blasted like iirc was necessary on some of the european imports bmw a few years ago. they are succeptible to a whole lot more than that. dropped valve guides were common in the earlier years and valve guide wear is still a problem. at about 90000km the heads on my new yorker were replaced under warranty due to a couple dropped guides. at about 190000 i had to replace the heads again due to worn guides causing oil consumption and killing the cat. new heads and cat passed emissions just fine - and again this year at 240000km. darn mitsushitty engines!!! .

i didnt see the original question however the key on-off routine works on my 95 ram. i first learned about it when i owned a 78 cordoba. on thu 25 sep 2003 140816 gmt tom lawrence tnloaswpraemnmcien5g@earthlink.net wrote for the caravan 97 it will turn off after 50 engine restarts if the problem is corrected; additionally you can get the trouble codes by turning the ignition switch on - off - on - off - on in a five second period and count the pulse codes the engine light will blink a two digit number ie. blink blink - blink blink blink - - - blink blink blink blink - blink etc. = 23 and 41 the haynes or chilton manuals or maybe even online have the decoding info. which is all well and good but doesnt really have anything to do with the original posters question. a 98 ram has an obd-ii system which means the dtc codes are 4 digits not 2. also the key on-off routine doesnt work on a 98 ram - that wasnt implemented until model year 2000. and on the 2000 and up the codes are displayed on the odometer not flashed through the check engine light. .

bilbo@the-shire.com wrote i didnt see the original question however the key on-off routine works on my 95 ram. yup but things changed drastically in 96. extracting trouble codes on an obd2 vehicle thru the check engine light is an exercise in futility there are numerous sub-codes which fall under any given trouble code flashed by the ce light. i first learned about it when i owned a 78 cordoba. i first learned about it when i owned an 75 f-150 .
