1990 Dodge Ram Charger Tranny question

Q: hello group im buying a 90 ram charger black with red interior. the tranny has 1st 2nd and 3rd gears but reverse doesnt work ...when shifted into reverse you hear whinning and and noise .you can feel that the truck wants to back up but nothin...shift back into drive and your fine.the truck is a steal and its going to the shop ............but what wrong with it the gentle man who owns the truck says the guy he took it to said it the valve assembly that controls the reverse gear....... whats my damage and is this minor or major work.......... thanks group michael .

hello group im buying a 90 ram charger black with red interior. the tranny has 1st 2nd and 3rd gears but reverse doesnt work ...when shifted into reverse you hear whinning and and noise .you can feel that the truck wants to back up but nothin...shift back into drive and your fine does it try to creep forward in neutral if not forget the rear clutch and look for a broken or out of adjustment rear band. john this is probably not the problem however i had the 727 on my 89 ramcharger go out due to a broken transmission case. there is a small protrusion in the inside of the case at the top of the transmission that the reverse gear catches on and it had broken off. i did not believe it until the transmission shop showed it to me. my truck showed exactly those symptoms though; fine in forward but no reverse even though i could hear and feel the transmission shift into reverse. disclaimer there are definitely more knowledgeable people on this forum than myself. i am a shade tree mechanic that knows little to nothing about transmissions other than to change the fluid and adjust the bands perhaps remove the valve body and install a shift kit in an older model. .
