1987 dodge ram 318 leaking a lot of coolant?
From : mikep28
Q: ok my dodge ram leaks about a full radiator full of water in about 200 miles. i dont drive the truck much but anyways. the leak is from the rear of the motor. with the engine running and me on the ground drivers side i see it coming from the very rear up high about the middle of the motor valve cover area. any place in general i should be looking i know these things are prone to freeze plug leaks in the bell shousing but if i see the water there i know its not a freeze plug. intake manifold coolant cooled i really dont know a lot about dodges in general hell i have never stripped a piston engine. i have done a ton of rotaries but no piston motors. although im well versed around the outside of motors tho. anyways and ideas anyone have something similar to share .

some wanted to know how things turned out with my ram rear differential problems with excessive play at the pinion. it turned out to be just an adjustment of the compression collar and tightening the retaining nut. basically just adjusting the end-play. they also replaced the rear universal joint. the shop checked for any metal shavings in the differential or any excessive heat after a 10mi drive at highway speeds and everything checked out fine. total bill was $50.00 even. there was never any leakage or noise so i guess it was caught just in time before any damage was done. i finally got a bit of luck to my side.......- i would question any repair that claimed to adjust the compression collar crush sleeve by simply tightening the nut without first removing the ring gear carrier. pinion bearing preload can only be measured without the drag of the ring gear. that was my mistake in terms. that should have been crush sleeve rather than my term. ed .
