Q: on 08 nov 2004 140943 gmt max340@aol.compost max340 wrote a gps is a completely different animal from a black box. horseshit. the black box performs the same functions recording speed distance direction just as a gps would. perhaps being from california isnt such a bad idea after all i cant believe i said that! google for automotive black box returns some interesting information. for instance from http//www.washtimes.com/upi-breaking/20040706-105007-9120r.htm the devices are getting more attention lately. california last week became the first state to regulate black boxes in cars preventing anyone using the information without the car owners permission or a court order. another article says the memory module for storing the data is only sufficient to store 5 seconds of data. from http//www.tarorigin.com/art/dgilman/ late model gm vehicles also contain several other sensors which provide information such as driver seat belt status. if there is a deployment or near-deployment event the last five seconds of data immediately prior to enabling the algorithm are stored in the modules memory eeprom. all of this stored data is available to the accident reconstructionist by using the proper software interface hardware and a pc. figure 2 shows how the pre-impact sensor data might appear when downloaded to a pc. once each second the module reads the most recent sensor data and stores them in a buffer that is constantly being refreshed keeping only the most recent five seconds of data. when the sdm algorithm enables shortly after impact buffer refreshing is suspended. it is important to note that the enabling of the algorithm is not synchronized with the buffering of the vehicle data. therefore the data recorded could be skewed in time from the crash by as much as one second. the sdm is designed so that 150 msec after the deployment algorithm has enabled all the data stored in memory is permanently written to the eeprom. once a deployment record is written it cannot be erased cleared or altered by service or crash investigation personnel. near-deployment events are treated differently. the data contained in the record are largely the same but the criteria used to determine whether an event is stored in eeprom is based solely on the maximum delta v observed during the event. if the maximum delta v is greater than the previously stored delta v from a previous event perhaps the new near-deployment event is stored along with its corresponding data. this near-deployment event is cleared from memory after 250 ignition cycles or about 60 days on average. they go on to say that you can purchase your own software and cable to download your vehicles data from vetronix inc. no price given but what value do you place on paranoia anyways and heres the typical use that most of us are aftraid of getting caught with http//www.clickondetroit.com/automotive/3786478/detail.html its part of an automobiles air-bag system and documents the speed braking acceleration and other data five seconds before the accident. it showed the pair of cars were going 95 miles per hour and led to a conviction of a death caused by a drunken driver. but it also has its positive side sometimes the big brother black box can be a drivers best friend. in 2002 a woman crossed a center line on drake road in west bloomfield. she was facing two years in prison for negligent homicide until prosecutors downloaded her cars black box. and regardless of whether you want it or not do your homework - they dont say which eleven companies are already using them other than gm http//www.embedded.com/showarticle.jhtmlarticleid=9900618 eleven of the 45 companies that build passenger cars worldwide already use some kind of black-box technology .

on tue 09 nov 2004 141122 gmt budd cochran mr-d150@citlinkspam.net wrote mandatory insurance can be a pita but if you own anything you need it anyway. do you really my folks never had car insurance and the worst accident and only accident we ever had hitting a steer at 30 mph in la junta co in a 56 plymouth wagon was covered by the cattle haulers insurance 7 steers escaped from a stock trailer. it totaled the car but no injuries. ive had a grand total of 5 accidents in my 35+ years of driving. only one could be considered my fault at all black ice and bald taxicab tires. if insurance is to be mandatory then let the government pay for it. why penalize good drivers for the stupidity of lousy ones but you cant go by your family and personal experience budd... hopefully you and the typical illegal alien driving without insurance are 2 different ends of the spectrum.. if you get hit by someone without insurance and they have no assets to fix your car you might think differently about requiring insurance... i like californias system you have to have liability but its up to you whether or not you want to insure against damage to your own car.. .

then we are in agreement here. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving yes. then it would be an invasion of privacy so yes i would wouldnt you -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving then you will oppose it right hd the minute that it does it is no longer a black box. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving a black box cant let bb watch you either. at least not yet....... hd .

when travelling credit cards are great. or for unexpected emergencies. a lot of places dont accept checks. so if you dont carry too much cash the choices are debit card credit card or dont buy it. like you say tom as long as you pay off your credit card and maintain a zero balance each month. just love pissing off the credit card companies by doing this. sometimes i think its cheaper to go to a loan shark then pay the high interest rates they have dale for a long time i didnt use credit cards either. i saw too many of my friends bury themselves in credit card dept and always believed not to buy something that you didnt already have the money for with the exception of a house. i still believe that but now use my credit cards for everything i buy and zero balance the cards every month. the point is that it is more than just your initial rating that is used it is your history as well. if you never use credit then it will not help you but will not hurt you either because you have no history. if you use credit and always carry an excessive balance of miss many payments it shows that you tend to be irresponsible and may increase your risk and costs. .

after seeing some of the drivers in the lot at the wal-mart on indian school rd. iirc im surprised you walked away at all. does everyone use them for ricer testing -- budd budd cochran wrote my agent for progressive asked when my last accident was1981 and i was rear ended at a stop light and said really thats longer than anyone else we insure. and quoted $35 / mo for pd pl on the d-150.yep it still pays to be a good driver. it stayed the same for the lebaron. my last accident was around 1982. fender bender that was ruled no fault. i was backing up which is why technically it was my fault. but the other driver was doing about 40mph in a parking lot so they ruled it no fault. .
