1986 slant6 advance problem

Q: paul email me about the slant six problem i may be able to help. budd i have a friend that has a 1986 slant 6 225 that does not advance the timing when i hit the accelerator. there is power to the second set of wires going to the alt you know the one that does not cause the eng to die when you disconnect them. i can see a small spark when i reconnect the connector. i have the timing set to 16 dg like it says but when i rev the motor the timing does not advance. what do you recommend i replace or check at this point thanks in advance!! paul .
