1969 Dodge D-100 318 Oil Light Question
From : carlton
Q: i was tuning on my old dodge last night and had something not quite right because it gave a pretty big backfire through the exhaust. its needed a new muffler/exhaust for a while but evidently this backfire was enough to blow out a nice chunk in the exhaust. shortly after that happened the oil light came on scaring me to death. i have good oil level so i decided to bring it on back up to the house from my test drive. it doesnt stay on constantly but seems to want to be on no matter about engine speed or whatever. i can take a turn or whatever and itll go off or hit a bump and itll go off but it wants to come on. my question is can a very low exhaust back pressure cause the oil pressure light to come on if not does anyone have any ideas about what i need to look at i certainly wouldnt think a simple tuning session would cause the problem nor a backfire in general... and the engine runs pretty well too so i am at a loss. thanks carlton .

ive had this problen on a slant 6. the oil pressure relief valve sticks open intermittently. it will eventually destroy your engine. i am assuming you have maybe 100000 on it. i was tuning on my old dodge last night and had something not quite right because it gave a pretty big backfire through the exhaust. its needed a new muffler/exhaust for a while but evidently this backfire was enough to blow out a nice chunk in the exhaust. shortly after that happened the oil light came on scaring me to death. i have good oil level so i decided to bring it on back up to the house from my test drive. it doesnt stay on constantly but seems to want to be on no matter about engine speed or whatever. i can take a turn or whatever and itll go off or hit a bump and itll go off but it wants to come on. my question is can a very low exhaust back pressure cause the oil pressure light to come on if not does anyone have any ideas about what i need to look at i certainly wouldnt think a simple tuning session would cause the problem nor a backfire in general... and the engine runs pretty well too so i am at a loss. thanks carlton .
