yes its one of the first mods most people do. that doesnt mean its a good thing to do. the idea is a good one keep the engine cool and it will last forever. however the engine is designed to run at 195-205*. put in a lower temp thermostat and youre likely to trick the computer in to thinking the engine never warms up and keeps it in the enrichment mode. maybe a tad extra power maybe but it will run rich and foul the plugs. additionally theres plenty of data telling you that running the engine too cool will accelerate cylinder wall wear. and absolutly no data telling you that you make more power or any other benificial effect. for an old fashioned carb engine 180* is fine. but for a modern efi engine stick with the 195*. had a friend that ran his malibu for a while with no thermostat at all. took forever to warm up but never overheated! i believe it was one of the first years for the ss in the 60s. so yeah its carbureted. .

sounds like the infamous fan relay a small $75 solid state device located on the frame just underneath the air filter. you can install it in 15-20 minutes with an 8mm nut driver or pay the dealer $60 labor. johnb johnbsgenerator@hotmail.com wrote my wife went to work today and the engine light came on our dodge 2000 grand caravan. when i arrived to check it out it would not start and the 2 radiator fans were spinning. it appears that the battery was drained none of the electrical components work windows locks etc. has anyone had a similar experience any ideas what might be going on with the van i took it to a shop that indicated that they needed to charge the battery up before they could troubleshoot the van. .

changing to a 180 thermostat is required if you install a performance computer or reprogram your existing one for a higher timing. you also have to run 92/93 octane fuel w/ the computer mod. the 180 helps keep the engine from pinging. otherwise i would not do it. not worth the hassle. in my case - i have the performance computer from mopar run a 180 thermostat run 93 octane fuel and get 2 extra mpg so it pays for itself in the extra fuel cost and i really like the extra perforamance when towing the boat. -- tony my boats at http//t.thomas.home.mchsi.com would someone please tell me how/where to get a 180 degree thermostat for my 2001 dodge dakota 4.7l v8 ive called autozone and oreilly; o said there is only a 195 and autozone doesnt have any thermostats for dodges older than 95. ive seen this listed on many a website as one of the first mods that folks do. email me or something please help! jason .
