had thought about putting on a brush guard until it was pointed out to me that with todays flimsy front bumpers it doesnt take much of a bump to roll the thing into the grill and hood. something to think about. jerry mine mounts to the frame and protects the flinsy bumper as well as the grill and hood. if i hit something hard enough to bend it into the hood the front of the truck would have been destroyed anyway. btw mine is black and has no rust 6 years. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

scott aleckson wrote i had the overdrive section of my auto transmission in this truck turn into a nice soupy mixture of metal shavings awhile back. since the truck had about 130k on it and the engine was getting tired i ordered up a rebuilt v6 and tranny from aftermarket sources. the tranny i received was date stamped as an 89 model but except for different sized fittings for the cooling lines everything appeared to fit the same and it went back together just fine and is running. ive rebuilt many engines but ive never really gotten into auto transmissions before but here are the symptoms of a problem that has come up. the truck holds a lower gear for way too long. when in drive the rpms go to near red-line without shifting. to force a shift it is necessary to get the speed up then let off the gas pedal a bit. at highway speeds it runs just fine so this issue only appears at low speeds. the second part of this problem is that the speedo now reads low. before the transmission change my gps showed a perfect match to the speedometer now it is reading about 5mph slow at highway speeds. if it were a standard tranny i would say that it is geared taller than the stock one was. any tranny guys out there who can provide some pointers on where to start with correcting this problem im hoping it is some simple tuning stuff so that i dont have to take her to a tranny shop to do it. hate to pay other people money to take care of mechanical stuff ya know. it was quite a bear to get that tranny in there in the first place... tia scott is the carburetor-to-transmission or throttle body-to-transmission rod or cable connected to the accelerator linkage if not the transmission has no throttle position reference and thinks you have the gas floored all the time or somewhere near floored. that would have nothing to do with the speedometer not reading correctly- that would be an incorrect or incorrectly installed speedometer pinion in the transmission tailshaft. .

i dont think the westins are mounted to the frame but to the body panel with some sort of bracing between the two connecting points. well they do attach to the frame. the main bracket bolts to the body mount which is part of the frame. this mount is then triangularly braced to the body to prevent deflection. has anyone had any negative issues with this i dont think ill be using it for a step but my first wife 118# and my mom 80+ years old will. the westins are rated to 350lbs. when i stand on mine the truck moves but the bars dont. your wife and mother wont even begin to stress the mounts. thanks tom that made up my mind. your opinion is one i respect. -- fmb only one b in fmb .

great info joe. my only real complaint with the infinity amp is that its *too* bassie sp too much bass. i listen mainly to 70-80s rock and /talk so i dont want/need that hip-hop thump. as far as power...i dont need it that loud either i know its cleaner at lower levels too. so unless its a simple crossover issue to fix the bass problem i might very well bypass the infinity amp with the new head. right now i have the bass slider almost to the bottom and treble a bit above midrange...thats tolerable. thanks for the advice. --mike michael just remember that if you hook it up that way you wont be taking advantage of the new decks cleaner higher power. youll still be at the mercy of the oem infinity amp and speakers. anyway when you get tired of the crappy sound from the nice head unit you can rewire the head directly to the speakers for much better sound. and yes crutchfield has the hookup to integrate the head unit into the factory wiring. joe black 03 dakota 5.9 r/t cc calypso green 93 5.0 mustang lx hatch with a few goodies michael greenwood mgreenwood@pacbell.net wrote in sorry for the joe bit but he replied too *and* signed his name...so it stuck with me so thank you too azwiley1. thats the info i was looking and hoping for. --mike thanks joe ok. anyway! you can just replace the head unit just make sure you connect the blue wire on the harness from the new radio to the blue wire on the harness adaptor for the truck. hi joe thanks for the input. what if i just want to replace the head unit and keep all else the same iow wire the new head to the infinity amp etc big deal does crutchfiels have a harness for it thanks. --mike all true. because the oem head unit infinity amp and factory crossovers are all hooked into the factory harness its necessary to rewire right from the new head unit to an aftermarket amp if applicable to the new crossovers and to the new speakers. its not a trivial job but probably worth it if the new components are decent. joe black 03 dakota 5.9 r/t cc calypso green 93 5.0 mustang lx hatch with a few goodies azwiley1 azwiley1@spamearthblowslynk.net wrote in michael i have been doing car audio for almost 13 years a lot on and off but none the less i can tell you it is not as easy as just installing a new head unit. each vehicle is different. the problem lies here though if you install say the alpine cda-9811 am/fm/cd/mp3/wma player w/built in eq and crossover which is a 50x4 unit and you connect the amp trigger lines together guess what you just negated the power on the deck and are only using the amp in the truck. you have to completely by pass the amp in the truck by running new wires to the speakers to tapping in to the factory wires past the amp to use the features of the new unit. the same would apply if you added a new amp to the new deck. hope this helps and clears it up some. hi joe so would replacing the head unit be a simple exercise if the amp is seperate i want a unit that will play mp3s on a cd. the stock unit on my 03 will not. it is the infinity system btw. --mike iamgoode@aol.com iamgoode wrote in im looking to upgrade my factory stereo ive blown 3 infinity speakers now and im ready for something else. i want to replace the front speakers wtih better quality but the same size and put something a little larger in the back doors its a quad cab. my questions are does the back speaker set up have a cross over in the premium factory system would seperates or coaxial work better in the back anyone have luck running any larger speakers under the factory grilles recommended wattage ratings thanks. sean rec.bicycles.marketplace the 00 dak sound system is similar to the 03 which is what i have. the basic layout is this stock oem head unit about 5 watts/channel rms speaker leads feed the infinity amp about 15 watts/channel rms in the passenger kick panel which in turn drives the speakers. btw the infinity amp is very heavily eqd to compensate for the lousy speakers. in the cc the front speakers are components whereas the rears are simply coaxial. dont know about the qc rears but the fronts are the same. the crossovers are somewhere in the wiring between the speakers and the infinity amp which is garbage btw. assuming youre not going with a subwoofer your best bet is to get a new head unit an aftermarket amp if you can afford it and 4 component speakers. components will almost always sound better than coaxials - you just need adequate power for them. on the qc the woofer size is 6-3/4 all around. some components come with tweeters mounted in the woofer others have separate tweeters like the fronts in your qc. regardless theyll all have crossovers. either way youll be able to find components that can fit. also make sure you get adquate wiring based on your amps rating. joe black 03 dakota 5

hi frank i think the money would be better spent on a good power amp driven by the stock head unit and perhaps better speakers. too bad the stock speaker mounting locations suck so bad. my main problem is that the stock head wont play cds stuffed with mp3s and wmas ida thunk that a 2003 vehicle with a supposedly upgraded sound system could do this. oh well... --mike joe avoidingspam@hotmail.com wrote yes the infinity amp is very heavily eqd to compensate for the lousy frequency response of the speakers. theres tons of low end around 50-60hz and the high end is definitely lacking. the whole thing cant be pushed too hard or the speakers start flapping and farting. i have a 95 so this may not apply. but my front speakers two ways were covered with a grill cloth that low pass filtered out most of the highs. i took out the speakers and saw this almost opaque cloth so i ripped it off and put the speakers back in - it made a world of difference. give it a try its free. until you run your head unit directly to the speakers hopefully new components bypassing the factory stuff youll be locked into the substandard sound of the oem infinity amp/speakers. i think the money would be better spent on a good power amp driven by the stock head unit and perhaps better speakers. too bad the stock speaker mounting locations suck so bad. frank ball frankb@sonic.net .

on the 2500 4x4 the front axle on the older 2000-2001 trucks were danas. now they appear to be a 9 1/4 like in a half ton rear when did this change any problems with the new front axle when did they drop the locking hubs on the diesel this changed for the 02 model year on the 1500s 03 for the 2500/3500. dc and dana had a falling-out over some quality issues and dc made the switch to the aam axles which they had been using in the rear of the 1500s for a while. so far there havent been any reports of axle problems other than some confusion between the factory and the dealerships over whos responsibility it was to fill the axles with lube. locking hubs have been absent for over 10 years now... rams from 94 up to 01/02 for the 1500 and 2500/3500 respectively have used the cad center axle disconnect system. with the new 02/03s and up there is no axle/hub disconnect system at all - the front axles turn all the time. now only the transfer case engages/disengages power transfer to the front driveshaft. i also noticed a general cheapening of the new truck. is dodge lowering their quality in some aspects yes in others no. how does the new 5.7 compare to the 360 5.9 im most interested in longevity. that question cant be answered yet - the engines too new. .

not that im god or anything. but i think both ideas are correct. a differential is designed to not favor any side and it doesnt. true enough the wheel with less traction always spins then both ideas are not correct. incorrect. look deeply into the idea........... there is more to a vehicles motion than purely the differential. the whole vehicle pushes down on one side more than the other under heavy accelleration. that leads to a tendancy or the general favoring for the side that gets pushed down on less to have less traction. for the same reason a helocopter needs that tail rotor to resist the torsion of the whole body. with nothing on the ground the blades axis of rotation causes an equal an dopposite reaction by spinning the body of the helicopter. the torsion of the engine causes an equal and opposite reaction on the chassis of the vehicle.... im sure you get all this but youre being anal about that favored word. so if it has generally less traction on a relatively even traction surface for both wheels the one that is pushed down on less will generally be the spinner. but torsion of the chassis leads to a general condition of one side having more downward force holding the tire to the road under heavy acceleration. there is one of those conditions i was talking about proving that a favored axle doesnt exist. incorrect. the diff doesnt favor it but the vehicle does. so that would mean the other side would have less traction because its not being pushed down on by torsion of the chassis even though both wheels are on similar traction surfaces. again similar is not good enough. ok but itll have to do unless you have some magic road surfaces and tires on your vehicle. but i think we all know that what ever tire is on the ice... if the other is on bare pavement.... will spin no matter what side its on providing the traction control doesnt stop it. proving once again that one of the ideas is not correct. not really. i notice that when i spin the tires with my jeep it is always the passenger side tire that leaves the mark. the differential did not favor that side i agree. but something does.... the vehicle... and torsion of the body does lead to a general condition of one wheel spinning more than the other when the wheels are on simmilar traction surfaces. simmilar is close enough... sure its never perfectly the same traction for both tires but same enough for my jeep to only lay rubber on one side always the passenger side. of course theres no rubber laying if one side is on water or ice. max anvils dont kill cartoon characters cartoon characters kill cartoon characters. .

incorrect. look deeply into the idea.......... more bullshit... pull on the waders..... there is more to a vehicles motion than purely the differential. exactly so its an external influence on the differential. a differential cannot will not and never has favored either axle. add outside circumstances and forces and bingo one wheel spins more easily. and its not always the right side. im sure you get all this but youre being anal about that favored word. wrong. its those of you who think as differentail has any method of favoring an axle who are anal about it. im presenting facts. so if it has generally less traction on a relatively even traction surface for both wheels the one that is pushed down on less will generally be the spinner. horseshit. a statement full of maybes and possblies.... if the traction on both wheels is exactly not maybe not close not similar not relatively not anything but exactly the same neither axle will be favored. add any condition weight bias traction tire condition water ice snow idiot behind the wheel and the differential may spin one or the other axle. which axle spins depends on conditions. max life liberty and the pursuit of any jackass that threatens it. embellished usnavy slogan .
