i just buy a dakota 1999 3.9l v6 with 85000 miles and i dont know what oil is good for my new engine. is a shell helix 5w-40 the right one an other question is what fuel uses this truck here we have 93 95 and 97 octans is the 95 ok and finaly what is the milleage that i can expect from this truck i had that engine in a 99 ram. i always used 10w30 mobil 1 but 5w-40 would probably work better as it is a thinner oil and would benefit the engine. the thicker the oil the more the engine has to labor to get the oil through it. of course heat makes it thinner. i also used better quality filters to make sure less sluged would build up in the engine. about 2 years ago someone here posted a link to site were they checked out the different filters. took them apart and examned them etc. i used the fram toughguard filter. it costs around $5 at wal-mart. out of all the fram filters it has the best filtering for single pass. you have better octanes that i had available. the highest in texas i had were i lived with it was 93. i used that one. when i stressed the engine and used a lower octane i would notice engine knocking. at 93 i had none. although i have heard from many people that if you start using higher octane that the engine seems to somehow stick to liking that and when you go down again in octane the engine starts making noticable knocking. of course the times i went to mexico with the truck and used the regualr octane fuel the engine would then sound like a diesel ;-p if you take good care of the engine you should get a lot of milage out of it. i always used the mobil 1 oil and took care of the engine and before i wrecked my truck at 80k miles it ran very good and never deveoped a single oil leak from anything. thanks in advance. chris. .

every year represents at least one change and they are significant. in addition the 99 is 2nd generation. the 03 04 and newer are considered 3rd generation. the big difference between the 2nd and 3rd generation is the move from the mechanical pressure/time pump injectors to the new common rail fuel injectors. engine noise is drastically reduced with the common rail and horsepower almost doubled. adding performance boxes will add power but only add significant power with the 3rd gen. trucks. further info can be obtained on the following site http//www.dieseltruckresource.com/ steve i totaled my ram 1500 reg cab earlier this year. i really liked it. i have decided to get another 99 this week a 2500 ext. cab with the cummings turbo diesel. i was told that there is minor differences between the newer 600 ft lb diesel and the older model and i could install a performance chip to get the same results by installing one. is this so can anyone point me to some links that has discussion on it or a place that sells the chip does fuel performance go down i would think it would. thanks! .

jerry wrote the 45acp has been around a long time so naturally there are more customized parts available. translation -- your right nathan why spend a lot of money to make something shoot better when you can buy it out of the box for one third the price. this is pitiful. youre actually suggesting that an out of the box glock shoots in the same league as a customized kimber please answer that directly. you want to throw in the 1911 but leos wont carry it. and you want to throw in leo as if they are significant in this argument. in comparison to joe public leo buys only a small percentage of guns and ammo in this country. only 7 rounds in the magazine is under gunned. speaking as someone who can hit the side of a barn with a shotgun i find that statement to be rather silly. using a higher pressure propellant there is no such thing. please make up your mind! in http//tinyurl.com/4u7j5 you said then a new propellant was was used that actually produces higher pressure in the gap than the acp. modifying the case........ never said that either. i didnt say you did. in the real world however the gap is an acp with a shorter case. lol ........ you havent produced a single statement of proof yet. you have not disproven anything ive said. you havent even bothered to deny it. instead you two step around it. nothing you say can change the reasons i listed as to why i find the acp superior. i could list them again but since you failed to acknowledge them the first 5 times i said it i wont bother with gross redundancy. you were clambering that the 45acp was so popular it was going to take over the world......simply no so now is it. to the contrary jerry the .45 acp already has the world. it is you who is claiming the gap will replace it as top dog. the list i showed you was for the .357 sig i recommend you update your list. i have a relative in the nc highway patrol who assures me that he carries a glock 40. this is irrelevant anyway. you are the only one trying to limit this to leo use as if leo determines the success of a caliber. tell you what why dont you give me a comparable list as a starter for the .45 acp. how bout the literal millions of 1911s in the hands of private citizens - gee i wonder if the fact the sig was designed for the leo community might have something to do with it. doesnt matter jerry. it was never embraced by joe public therefore selections are few and prices are high. okay then give me something other than just your opinion to base that claim on. go to your local gun store. tell you you believe they sell as many ..357 sig rounds as they do .357 magnum rounds. see if they stop laughing before you reach your truck. you now have outright killed the .45gap and the .357sig sorry jerry the .357 sig killed itself with no help from me...and i fear the .45 gap will follow for the same reason the .357 sig failed....there just isnt enough incentive there to change. with all due respect nate you havent a clue what you are talking about. .....tell ya what jerry. when i tune in to espn to watch competition handgunning and theyre shooting the .45 gap ill remember you said that. - .

ive picked up an xm satellite receiver for the truck and am wondering if anyone has come up with a good way of mounting the antenna on the roof. i stuck my antenna just below the center marker light just above the windshield. on my 3rd gen truck theres a pretty deep groove between the windshield and the cab - i ran the wire in this groove. i used a bit of clear silicone where the wire first entered the windshield groove just to keep it in place. i ran it to the drivers side door where i was able to tuck it underneath the weatherstripping down the a-pillar and through an existing grommet in the side panel. this brought it in behind the dash and i then ran it along there and brought it out just to the right of the stock radio where i mounted my xm roady2 with a pro-fit mount. absolutely no drilling and very easy to install. its practically invisible... all you see is the little antenna box and thats only if you look for it. .

good. i did get a 5-speed manual transmission the only way to go off-road. it sounds like you have a standard output engine in either ca or one of the ca-emissions states. the ho engine in that year was available with the 6-spd transmission but the overdrive gear 5th on yours 6th on the nv5600 is the same. it also sounds like you have the 4.10 gears in your axles. 3.73 was the standard gearing which would only drop your rpms by about 9% or so ie. turning 2500rpms now would be 2275rpms with the taller gears. its about $1000-$1200 to have the gears swapped out. somewhere. fortunately most of my driving is on 55mph roads and that works fine at 2000rpms. is there other trannys available that are better suited for 70+ mph or other than fuel mileage are they ok runnintg at higher rpms there arent other transmissions - but there are over/under-drive units that can add a second overdrive. two vendors us gear and gear vendors make such units. both units are well over $2000 and require professional installation not the least of which is cutting and re-balancing the driveshafts. i believe only one of them will work with a 4wd unit - not sure which. in the end these engines run right at their governed speed a little over 3000rpm all day in other applications... it wont hurt much of anything but your wallet to run it there the aerodynamics on the 3rd gen trucks are pretty poor and fuel economy will go straight into the toilet up at those speeds. in time you might consider going to a larger tire to compensate for the low gearing. a 33 tall tire will fit without clearance issues and will give you effectively the same final drive ratio as you would have with your current tires and the 3.73 gears dropping your rpms by about 10%. .
