'01 Dakota rear-end whine

Q: i have an 01 dakota 3.9l automatic and i think the rear end is a 355. i have only about 22 k on it and the rear end has a slight whine when you accelerate. if you let off the gas it stops then as you accelerate it whines again. is this a normal noise i was thinking about changing the fluid soon anyway and i wanted to know if this is something i should get checked out. it doesnt sound like metal or grinding just a whine. any opinions are appreciated. gary b. .
