a week or 2 ago my 2006 dodge ram 2500 megacab with the cummins 5.9l and 6 speed manual started to cough and lose power/rpms and lots of white smoke or smoke looking substance like water vapor came out. it had an unknown percentage of bio-diesel in it -- small repeated fillups of various percents of bio with intermittentent straight dino diesel -- truck is 4 months old but only had 600-700 miles on it. this coughing and loss of power lasted a few minutes and then it seemed to work fine for a while. then it happened again. i added 10 gallons of dino diesel and was able to drive home 4 miles without incident. next day went out and had similar episodes. when it drives fine there is no smoke. when it starts to cough and lag and power loss occurs lots of white smoke comes out. a ton of it. i drained the water filter a few times thinking that maybe there was a high water content in the fuel. i also added some power service additive that is supposed to displace water. i was able to drive 50-70 miles without incident when it started again tonight. it would idle fine but when i pushed the accelerator it was like there was a regulator on it. it would rev up a little and then just totally lose power. i added another 7 or so gallons of dino tonight and some more power service additive. we are now up close to 800 miles on the odometer. i went and got some howes lubricator diesel treat which claims to eliminate water and added some of that. after that i was able to drive 5 or 6 miles when it started to happen again but the symptoms are now a lot less severe. i dont see as much smoke or any when it power losses and it does not lose as much power though it is still very noticable. it is like a governor is on the engine. it will idle and i can slowly increase the throttle and then between 1800 and 2500 not always at the same point the power loss happens and the rpms will drop. i was able to keep it going at up to 2000 rpm without loss sometimes but then get above that and it happens. any ideas i started to think that maybe the fuel filter was getting clogged and it was allowing enough fuel through for lower power use but as the throttle is increased it cannot get enough fuel to the engine. but everything is new and there should not be all sorts of deposits to come loose and clog the filter... change the fuel filter! while your at it buy a couple of them sounds like you will be needing them. id stop putting anything else in the tank other than diesel. actually id be inclined to drain the tank. i also would not go to the dealer unless you are darn sure you are covered due to the bio you added. roy i may be mistaken but i thought that bio blends up to 20% were considered acceptable by dodge and cummins engine company on 06 and later models. -- ---------------------------- -chris 05 ctd 06 liberty crd real trucks dont need spark plugs. thanks chad .

on mon 25 dec 2006 013703 -0500 carolina watercraft works cooltoys@bellsouth.net wrote id check out michelin ltx m/s. an excellent all around tire and these are what i use when i plow snow. there are times that i wish i had a dedicated snow tire and do plan ongetting a set to use only for plowing since i too run into ice a lot. for that i plan on getting blizzak w965 tires. part of the cause the problem original poster is having is because truck is very heavy in front compared to rear and while a better tire will help so will more weight in rear. if you place it on a scale you will find close 5000lbs of weight on front axle as it sits and maybe about half that in rear or a bit more unloaded. better tires and about 800 to 1000lbs in rear between wheel wells would help a good bit. when you have a lightly loaded driven axle pushing a much heavier one you will have issues on slick pavement though some may like to claim it is not a factor. also i have driven with blizzaks on a vehicle and they are not bad but i preffer studs for the really bad stuff. i run studded 10 ply bias style truck snow tires on my plow trucks in winter i have them mounted on extra sets of rims and they beat blizzaks in over all performance on ice and deep snow. granted the tires are low tech compare to radials in some regards but they are withfew if any peers when it really gets ugly plus since sidewalls are as strong as tread ply wise you will be very hard pressed to damage sidewalls on hidden object with the bias plys plowing snow while is not hard to damage a radial sidewall sometimes. in well over 20 years of plowing i have tried a lot of tires and on a whim i tried a new set of traction grip studded bias ply truck tires on some old extra 16.5 rims about 4 years ago on one truck and was so pleased i bought a set for other. i will never go back to a radial on plow truck in winter. sure the handling is not as crisp and they are noisy but those tires are really sure footed and the stiff side walls really help the big edge cleats molded into tire and the studs in them dig in when needed. ----------------- thesnoman.com .

suddenly without warning tom lawrence exclaimed 22-dec-06 1244 am so far all ive downed is a ringneck pheasant hen actually my antenna did. unfortunately the law in the uk is that the person who hit the bird *cannot* take it home for dinner presumably. however if youre lucky enuf to be in the next car you can. just how many people were deliberately taking pheasant out of season with their vehicles for the legislature to decide a law was needed well thats an easy work-around... you just need to go out in two-person pheasant-seeking hunter/killer teams. lead tags em wingman bags em. yes weve considered that jmc .

i have a 01 dakota 4.7l auto trans. hard as ever to start cold. sometimes hard to start even warm. i have to crank it 3 or 4 times as a norm unless i shut it off and start it within a couple minutes. there are no codes showing. i have already changed the idle air control solenoid valve dealer shop recommended and completely cleaned the intake area including the throttle position sensor. resistance readings on the tps show nothing wrong. once it starts it runs fine. there is a hissing like a vacuum leak behind the intake throat i cant track down and the dealer svc center says is normal. has anyone else here experienced this what was the fix........any suggestions from the rest thanks in advance joe i would have the fuel pressure checked to make sure you have the proper fuel pressure at start up. mike .

also if you have a vacuum leak that is letting in more air than needed at startup. you might want to get that hissing sound fixed. hank .

i have a 1992 5.9 in a allegro bay motorhome... when i tried to drive it home from the dealer it was fine for about the first 15 miles. slowly it lost what little power it had. it went from cruising at 65mph to 35mph. the engine temp will never get out of the red cold zone. everytime you let off the accelerator the motor would stall. i took it back and they said they fixed it by replacing the fuel filter.... on my drive back home it was better for about 20 miles. then it began losing power and by the time i got home the power was coming in 15 second intervals. the rpms would jump up to about 2200 for about 15 seconds then drop down to 1400 for 15 seconds and then back up. i thought maybe i was low on fuel so i stopped and put in 15 gallons of diesel. this did not help anything. i did notice when i was fueling up that it leaked between the fuel filler hose hose and the top of the tank..... any ideas .
